COACHING PHILOSOPHY

The coach-athlete relationship is a privileged one and plays a critical role in the personal, sport, and athletic development of the young athlete.  And is a relationship that I consider to be very important.   My approach and subsequent purpose in coaching and teaching can be summarized with one general thought, “No one has the right to determine the limitation of another….but we have the responsibility to encourage them to reach their potential”.   This is my own quote that dictates every decision I make and how I handle myself as a leader.  I want to see each athlete to reach their potential through the things I will do for them (focused skill development, well thought out practices, team work, goal setting and constructive feedback) and the things I expect them to do for themselves (attend all team events with the purpose of working hard, being engaged and wanting to learn and improve).  The athletes will be exposed to a positive environment where I will model what behaviours are expected of them; respect oneself, coaches, teammates and officials, listening to and appreciating the needs of others, open communication and all actions are made with the best interest of the team’s success and improvement.  I want all athletes to learn, have fun and become more confident in themselves.

Meet The Team

JANET HEPPELL, DIRECTOR & HEADCOACH

Janet started coaching junior high boys’ basketball over 15 years ago and things have taken off from there contributing to club, high school, provincial and competitive summer programs.

"My first coaching experiences often involved building programs from the ground up, developing first time players into competent athletes. These early years played a huge role in developing my approach to coaching and overall coaching philosophy."  Coaches have to focus on developing their players, to teach, push and help the athlete be ready for the next level…to strive to have them reach their potential

.

Went on to coach community club U16 girls, and a couple of years of U10 girls. This experience led to being asked to coach for Basketball Nova Scotia for the next four years including the 2016 u15 girls’ team, placing 6th at Nationals.

Many of my athletes, from club, school and provincial teams, have gone on to play USport or ACAA basketball.
